50 Year Trail - Jun 06, 2009

I parked at the equestrian area of Catalina State Park and rode from there to the chutes. Did 1 lap of the chutes, then headed off onto Midgate trail and joined back up with 50YT again. Headed back south to start. I encountered several other riders and also a lot of equestians. Saw a lot of roadrunners too for some reason.

Deuces Wild XTERRA - May 31, 2009

This was the mountain bike course for the '09 Deuces Wild XTERRA. My wife and I did this race as a relay and I rode the bike portion. She did the swim and run legs of the relay. The course was very muddy with a few downed trees that had to be crossed. Would not be able to find my way along parts of it if it were not for the race flags and volunteers directing racers. They decided not to flood the tunnel this year which I was very grateful for since I had already had enough mud for one day!

Brown County State Park

Krista and I rented mountain bikes and headed down to BCSP over Memorial Day Weekend to check out the trails I had read so much about. I had an '09 Trek Fuel EX8 and she had an '09 Giant Trance X2. These trails were designed by mountain bikers, for mountain bikers and were a blast to ride! Who thought they had trails like these in Indiana? The trails were pretty busy since it was a holiday weekend. There was a group of about 10 riders from Dayton, Ohio I chatted with while waiting for Krista to catch up. I can't wait to go back and ride them again next year! I rode them from end-to-end, taking the shorter way back. If one wanted additional miles, they could retrace their entire path back and get in another 5-6 miles or so.

Flagstaff Frenzy

Flagstaff Frenzy

Krista and I headed up to Flagstaff Friday night to ride the Flagstaff Frenzy. This was the 7th race of the 2009 MBAA Championship Series and the first of 2 races held in Flag. The weather was hotter than normal, and this did not help considering my start time wasn't until 11:38. The starting line was just off Hwy 180 on some forest road right before the turn-off for Snowbowl Rd. The course had been changed the day before and it didn't seem as established in some parts as I would have liked. Some parts were very narrow, rocky, and technical. I had to hop off more than a few times to carry my bike over sections that to me were impassable. There was a very long section of climbing with over 5% grade. To put it into perspective, that is the same as climbing Mt. Lemmon on the Catalina Hwy! To make things worse, some disgruntled ex-bike shop employee had been going around and sabotaging the course by taking down markers and placing obstacles in the trail. I heard some riders even got lost because he changed the course on them between laps! I don't think they ever caught the guy, but the Sherriff was out looking for him. The combination of the heat and the elevation really got to me. I ended up coming in 5th out of 6 riders which was a little disappointing. At least I got a medal I guess! I will have to prepare myself a little more for the Flagstaff Finale race next month. Krista also got a medal, she came in 5th as well.
